prof. Byol Kang

Born in Salzburg to a South Korean composer mother and a singer father, Byol Kang was immersed in music from an early age. After moving to the Rhineland, she began playing the violin at eight, and just four years later made her debut at the Berlin Philharmonie with the Berlin Symphony Orchestra. Since then, she has maintained an active international concert career. She has performed in major concert halls including Carnegie Hall in New York, the Vienna Konzerthaus, the Gewandhaus Leipzig, the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg, the Bremen Glocke, and the Meistersingerhalle in Nuremberg. In 2009, she won first prize at the German Music Competition as the only violinist. Further awards followed at international competitions such as Henri Marteau, Lipizer, Varallo Sesia, and Max Rostal. She has also been supported by the Borletti-Buitoni Trust in London and the Deutsche Stiftung Musikleben.

As a soloist, she has appeared with orchestras including the Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin, the Konzerthausorchester Berlin, the Lower Saxony State Orchestra Hanover, the Hofer Symphoniker, and the Nuremberg Symphony Orchestra. Chamber music holds a central place in her artistic work. She has performed at festivals such as the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Festival, the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival, the Verbier Festival, PODIUM Festival Esslingen, and the “Spannungen” Chamber Music Festival in Heimbach, where several of her concerts have been recorded live. In January 2015, her second CD, Romantic Impressions (GENUIN), was released in collaboration with pianist Boris Kusnezow, featuring works by Johannes Brahms, Clara Schumann, and Edvard Grieg. Since the 2016/17 season, Byol Kang has been concertmaster of the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin.

After studying in Rostock and Düsseldorf, she completed her concert exam in 2013 at the Hanns Eisler School of Music Berlin with Professor Antje Weithaas. Since 2022, Byol has been teaching at the Hanns Eisler School of Music.
